The always on display is nice, but it is very bright and distracting, especially when it is also showing notifications.

However, it is definitely more distracting than the notch when watching full screen video. Personally I think it looks better than the notch in everyday use, and I like how it is very integrated with the UI.

The squared-off edges of the 14 Pro Max look a lot nicer in pictures, but makes the phone slightly less comfortable to use in one hand. This iPhone 14 Pro Max is a chonker compared to the 10S Max.This is much better for right-handed use as the heat isn’t directly on your palm. There is a slight hotspot which is on the left (where the SoC is), as opposed to the right hand side on the iPhone 10S. The heat does seem to be more evenly distributed throughout the chassis compared to the iPhone 10S, probably due to the liberal use of graphite heat-spreaders. The 14 Pro does get warm in use when running more intensive apps like video capture with high display brightness.120Hz is a nice-to-have, the main benefit I find with high refresh rate displays is that I can still read content easily white scrolling.The UI on the iPhone 14 Pro Max on iOS16.1 is very smooth compared to many Android flagships I’ve tried, but some parts of the UI still experience frame drops (especially swiping to the App Drawer and Safari tabs).To be honest though, the 10S Max is still performant and almost on par with many Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagships on the market today in terms of performance/W.

We all know that the A16 has chart-topping single-threaded performance, and the 14 Pro Max feels snappy in everyday use.In dark situations, when I select the 3X zoom (77mm equivalent), the 14 Pro Max will actually crop into the main 1X sensor instead of using the 3X lens, presumably because the main lens has a larger sensor and aperture.

The new 2X focal length performs well in brightly lit scenes and I can’t easily tell by looking at the images that it’s a crop of the main 48MP sensor, but in low light the quality difference is much more noticeable.Yet another reason I’m keeping my “proper” mirrorless camera around. Lens flare is awful and is especially noticeable in video.Unfortunately, like the iPhone 10S, you can’t switch lenses during recording at 4K60.HDR is available at 4K60 (unlike the iPhone 10S which only supports HDR up to 4K30).The natural bokeh is much better, although for quick point and shoot shots I have to be more mindful of correct focus. I can immediately tell that the main sensor is much larger and has a larger aperture than one on the iPhone 10S.I actually prefer image noise over de-noising artefacts, so I wish there was an option to turn this processing step off. Noise-reduction in photos takes a second or two, so if I view an image immediately after taking it, I can see the noisy image followed by de-noised result.Thankfully, there is an option to shoot in “ProRAW” which is much better and gives results that are scarily similar to my Sony A6400 mirrorless camera. This has the effect of making busy scenes with lots of texture appear artificial and over-processed. It’s like the radius of an upsharp mask is set too high. The 14 Pro has a tendency to over-sharpen and over-saturate images in standard mode. The biggest difference I noticed compared to the iPhone 10S was in the processing of photos.
